Working again with Architects for Social Housing we contributed to ‘Saving St Raphael’s Estate: the Alternative to demolition’. Our work established that the embodied carbon cost of demolition and rebuilding were approximately 4 times that of ASH’s alternative scheme. Following the publication of the report, Brent council decided not to pursue demolition of the estate. We were told our contribution was instrumental in the decision.
RIBA selected the project as a case study in sustainable estate regeneration for inclusion in its Built for Environment report. It was also featured as part of the Building Centre’s exhibition on Retrofitting Social Housing: Alternatives to Demolition.
