Working with Architects for Social Housing we examined the carbon implications of the proposed demolition of 450 flats in central London. Fighting plans to replace their homes, the residents of Central Hill Estate in Lambeth used our report to strengthen their case. The report calculated the carbon emissions associated with the demolition process as well as the release of carbon currently stored in the building fabric.
The report was presented to the local authority as part of their campaigns to demonstrate that there were alternatives to demolition that the local authority was not addressing. As a result in this case, as with St Raphael’s Estate, the full demolition schemes were not carried forward.
